Book Review : BL/Yaoi

It was in 2019 when I first fell in love with reading and buying books, but that passion faded for a while due to many factors. Now, I’m rekindling my love for reading, and since 2024, I’ve been diving back into books more than ever. I’ve been inspired by so many bookish girls, book clubs, and fellow book nerds who passionately support authors—encouraging them to create more interesting stories, unforgettable characters, and amazing worlds. That made me think: maybe I should leave my own comments, opinions, or reviews on the books I’ve read. Who knows? It might encourage authors and aspiring writers to keep creating more stories for us readers to enjoy and discover.

This is my first review out of all the books I’ve read—and honestly, I’ve finished 60 books this year! I’m hoping to beat that number. My goal for next year is at least 80 books, so I’m planning to review each one  if I can. For starters, I’ll be reviewing a BL/Yaoi title.

If anyone comes across this post and doesn’t know what BL/Yaoi is, it’s a genre where both main characters are male, usually with a romantic theme. Some stories also include sexual content in various forms. So if you’re a BL/Yaoi fan, you’ve come to the right page!

By the way, I also have a Facebook page called Whispers Between Pages—feel free to check it out. I post here and there whenever inspiration hits.

BOOK REVIEW #1 OMEGA MAGAERA by MAKI MARUKIDO

Synopsis: This omegaverse manga follows Saimon, an omega shunned by his powerful in-laws, who becomes entangled in a dangerous web of secrets when he’s tasked with finding the family patriarch’s hidden son. His bold plan to protect his place in the household sets off a tense, high-stakes drama that explores power, identity, and societal expectations without giving too much away.

Verdict : This manga/BL (Yaoi) has a lot of potential, drawing readers in with its intriguing characters. The art style is simple, yet it effectively conveys the emotional depth of the characters.

At the heart of the story is a complex family feud, where the struggle for power and the inheritance of family treasures sets the stage for intense drama. The plot is set within an omegaverse world, adding a unique layer to the already charged atmosphere of rivalry and ambition.

However, the downside is that the book is still incomplete, at least at the point I’ve read—just part one. While the potential for growth is clear, it leaves you wanting more. If you enjoy complex relationships set against a backdrop of rivalry, power struggles, and family jealousy, this is definitely a series to keep an eye on. Just be prepared to wait for the next installment!

BOOK REVIEW # 2 : LIGHT OF MY LIFE by TAKIBA

Synopsis:  Two former best friends, Aki and Minagi, are forced to confront the past that tore them apart when Minagi unexpectedly shows up at Aki’s doorstep years later. As their very different adult lives collide, the two must decide whether facing old wounds might open the door to a future they never thought possible.

Verdict : A story of friendship, love, and sacrifice, absolutely stunning! It’s unputdownable and a total tear-jerker. I adore the storyline and the art. The spice is mild and gentle, and you can really feel the slow burn and yearning between the main characters.

Minagi's character is fun, outgoing, easy-life. He is popular and handsome, yet humble. While Aki, has a bit of rough life. But with Minagi on his side, he'll get through.

The side character is a breath of fresh air, perfectly balancing the drama between the two MCs. The side story is a bit short, but overall, it’s perfect for any BL/Yaoi fan out there. I absolutely recommend it!

And there you go! I hope you are inspired to read more BL/ Yaoi. 😉❤
